It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Thomas Joseph Schwaller, 82, of Westland, MI. He passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, October 31, 2026, surrounded by his family.
Tom was born in Detroit, MI on September 20, 1944, to the late Albert and Zelma Schwaller. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1967, where he served in Vietnam for 6 months, before he was injured in battle in 1969. He was honorably discharged with a Purple Heart, alongside many other honors. He met his beloved wife, Marilyn, on Labor Day in 1966, and they married in 1970, spending 56 wonderful years together.
After his military service, Tom earned his diesel mechanic certification in Chicago and went on to work for AAATA as a bus mechanic for 30 years. A master mechanic and ultimate handyman, Tom could fix or build anything. He was deeply proud of his military service, loved sharing stories with fellow veterans, and enjoyed spending time with his family, tinkering in his garage, shopping at Ollie's, and cheering on U of M football and of course, the Detroit Lions.
Tom is survived by his devoted wife, Marilyn; his daughter Keri (Gary); his son Andrew (Jennifer); his granddaughter Audrianna (Joe); his grandsons Austin (Hailey) and Jonathon; his great-grandchildren Kayliana, Ariana, David, Jayda, James, Raylynn, and Sophia; his siblings Albert, Larry, and Arlene; many nieces and nephews; and his best friend, Jim.
He will be remembered for his strength, perseverance, brilliant mechanical mind, fiery Irish streak, and love of his country. He will be immeasurably missed by all who knew him.
