Obituary

Suzanne Louise Smith, a beacon of loving-kindness and gentle compassion, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2025, at her home in West Bloomfield, Michigan. Born on May 25, 1947, in Ypsilanti, Michigan, Suzanne's life was a tapestry woven with dedication, care, and a zest for life that was as infectious as it was inspiring. Suzanne's journey was one marked by a steadfast commitment to nurturing those around her. After obtaining her nursing degree, she embraced a career that allowed her to extend her natural warmth and healing touch to those in need. A retired nurse, Suzanne's care extended beyond the hospital wards into her community, where she was instrumental in conducting medical screenings at the local community center. Her passion for writing shone through her contributions to her community newsletter, a task she undertook with pride and joy. Her personal life was equally rich and full of love. A devoted mother to Kelley (Edward) DeTullio, Karen (Mark) Spooner, and Kate Smith, Suzanne's guidance and affection were the cornerstones of her daughters' lives. Suzanne's legacy also lives on through her cherished grandchildren, Lauren Smith, Alex Cutsy, Adam Cutsy, Maddie Spooner, and Hannah Osterling, who will forever remember their grandmother's kindness and gentle spirit. Suzanne was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 31 years, Donald Smith, with whom she shared many of life's most beautiful moments, including their shared love for golf. Her sister, Sandra Smith, and brother, Thomas Heller and her father, Delance Heller, along with her mother, Margaret Heller, also preceded her in this journey. Suzanne's interests were a reflection of her vibrant personality. She found joy in working at craft shows held at her church, and her love for books, especially historical fiction and mysteries, was well-known among her friends and family. Suzanne had an impeccable sense of style and relished the opportunity to dress up for a night out. Her musical tastes ranged from the soulful sounds of Motown to the timeless tunes of Neil Diamond, and she never missed a chance to enjoy a Broadway show. Those who knew Suzanne would say she lived her life to the fullest, embracing every opportunity with an open heart and a smile that could light up a room. Her loving nature, kindness, and gentle demeanor were not just qualities but the essence of her being. As we bid farewell to Suzanne Louise Smith, we celebrate a life lived with grace and generosity. Her memory will continue to guide and comfort us, just as her presence did throughout her remarkable life. Suzanne's spirit, a gentle whisper of love and kindness, will forever be felt by those who were fortunate enough to have known her.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in her honor.
