Shirley Elizabeth
Vogan
April 6, 1931 – December 17, 2025
Shirley Elizabeth Vogan, a beacon of warmth and kindness, passed away on December 17, 2025, at the age of 94. She was born on April 6, 1931, in Wayne, Michigan, to the late Gordon and Mary Thorold. Shirley's final days were spent in Westland, Michigan, surrounded by the love and memories she so tenderly cultivated throughout her life.
Shirley's life took a beautiful turn when she met the love of her life, Douglas Vogan, at a local restaurant where she worked as a car hop. Douglas, charmed by her sweet disposition, became a regular customer, and their love story began. They were married on August 27, 1949, and their partnership continued until Douglas's passing in 2008.
Shirley's nurturing spirit found a professional outlet at Garden City Hospital, where she served as a nurse's aide until her retirement in 1995. Her compassion and care for others left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
Family was the cornerstone of Shirley's world. She is survived by her loving daughters, Lynn Moore and Mary (the late Larry) Sanders; and was preceded in death by her son, Paul Vogan. Her legacy includes her cherished grandchildren Stacy (Matt) White, the late Curt Guiles, Paula (Bert) Saucedo, Brian (Callie Wingard) Vogan, Jacob (Becky) Vogan, Janelle (Kane) Hanson, Larry (Shannon Drouillard) Sanders, and Michael (Tina) Sanders. Shirley's great-grandchildren Ellie, Ben, Jake, Cody, Evan (Sam), Dominic, Shelby, Waylon, Layla, Wesley, Tyler (Ashley), Makayla, Justin, Dawson, Blake, and Kaylee, along with great-great-grandchildren Olivia and Elena, will forever hold her in their hearts.
Shirley was a woman of many joys. She relished the winters spent in Florida. Her involvement with the Dyers Senior Center in Westland was a source of great pleasure; she delighted in the camaraderie and the various activities and day trips they organized. An avid gardener, Shirley found peace and purpose in the beauty of her flowers and the meticulous care of her yard. Her love for dining out was matched only by the joy she found in the company of her friends, with whom she shared many meals and game nights.
Golfing was not just a pastime for Shirley; it was an extension of her social circle and her zest for life. Her long-standing membership at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Westland attested to her faith and community spirit, as did her years as a member of the Ypsilanti Moose.
Shirley's great sense of humor, her sweetness, and her loving concern for everyone's well-being will be profoundly missed. She lived her life as a testament to the power of love and the importance of family. Her legacy of kindness and joy will continue to inspire and guide those who were fortunate enough to know her.
As we bid farewell to Shirley Elizabeth Vogan, we celebrate a life richly lived and a heart generously shared. Her laughter and light will continue to echo in the lives of her family and friends, reminding us all of the beauty of a life well-loved.
