Shirley Ann Carruth, age 88, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2026. She was born on October 21, 1937, in Arab, Alabama, to the late Duford and Pearl Martin.

Shirley lived a life centered on love, family, and selfless devotion to those around her. Known for her kind heart, generous spirit, and a touch of feistiness that made her unforgettable, she touched the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know her. She was the type of person who would put the needs of others before her own and was always ready to lend a helping hand, offer encouragement, or share a story from her remarkable life.

She was the beloved wife of George Carruth, with whom she shared nearly 60 wonderful years of marriage before his passing in 2014. Shirley met George in Norfolk, Virginia, and together they began their life's journey, moving to Michigan when she was just 18 years old. Through the years, they built a loving home and a strong family foundation that continues to endure.

Shirley was a devoted mother to Kenneth Carruth, Linda (Errol) Yax, Robert Carruth, Glen (Sharon) Carruth, and Kevin (Cherry) Carruth. She was preceded in death by her children William Carruth, Debbie Thomas, and Richard Carruth. Her family was the center of her world, and she found her greatest joy in spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She leaves behind a cherished legacy through her grandchildren: Jason (Nicole) Yax, Kristal (Aizaz) Chughtai, Scott (Christine) Carruth, Sarah (John) Sturgill, Austin (Mark Chris) Watson, Ryan (Korine) Carruth, Corey Carruth, Zachery (Myra) Carruth, Amanda (Tristan) Mathews, Jacob Carruth, and Justin Carruth.

Shirley was also the proud great-grandmother of Jacob Yax (Mariah Budimervich), Nathan Yax, Kassidi Carruth, Skyler Carruth, Kacie Mathews, Zane Carruth, Remington Chughtai, Harley Sturgill, John "JD" Sturgill, Bryson Carruth, Logan Mathews, and Quinn Carruth. Each of them held a special place in her heart, and she treasured every opportunity to celebrate their lives and accomplishments.

Beyond her devotion to family, Shirley had many talents and interests. She was an avid reader and enjoyed writing stories about her life, childhood, and the fascinating people she encountered along the way. These stories have become treasured keepsakes that will continue to connect generations of her family and preserve her memories for years to come. She was also a talented sewer and mender, able to repair and create with patience and skill. Whether hemming a garment, fixing a cherished item, or helping someone in need, she took pride in caring for others through her work. Shirley also enjoyed bowling and shared many happy moments with friends and family through the sport.

Though her family mourns her passing, they take comfort in the countless memories she created and the lessons she taught through her example of love, resilience, generosity, and strength. Her legacy lives on in the family she cherished, the stories she preserved, and the love she shared so freely throughout her life.

Shirley will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever held in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
