Obituary

Rutha Mae Lawson, age 90, of Wayne, Michigan, passed away on March 31, 2026. She was born on December 16, 1935, in Garrett, Kentucky, to the late Wootsie and Minda Moore.

Rutha lived a life marked by love, faith, and steadfast devotion to her family and friends. She was a vibrant and friendly woman whose warm spirit touched everyone who knew her. Those who were blessed to know her will remember her as loving, faith-filled, strong, and supportive, with a kind heart and a welcoming smile that made others feel at ease.

She was united in marriage to Freeman "Bud" Lawson on January 7, 1955, and together they shared many years of love and companionship. Their marriage was built on devotion, hard work, and mutual respect. Rutha met her husband while she was working at a restaurant, a place where her hardworking nature and cheerful personality were already shining through. Together, they built a family that became the center of her life and the source of her greatest joy.

Rutha was the proud mother of Thomas Lawson (Dottie), Remona Drouillard, and Damita Lawson (Don). She cherished her children deeply and was always there with encouragement, wisdom, and care. Her love extended to her grandchildren, Lindsay El-Yussif (Eddie), Thomas Jr., and Deric, as well as her great-grandson, Nicholas El-Yussif, all of whom brought her great happiness. She also held a special place in her heart for her siblings, the late Wanda Lee, Alene, Gearldine, and Mander, and treasured the bonds of family throughout her life.

A hard-working woman by nature, Rutha worked many jobs throughout her life and approached each one with determination and pride. She understood the value of honest work and carried that same spirit into every part of her life. Whether she was caring for her family, helping a neighbor, or lending a listening ear, she gave of herself freely and without hesitation.

Rutha enjoyed many simple pleasures that reflected her joyful and active spirit. She loved gardening, both flowers and vegetables. She also enjoyed sewing, walking, and riding her bike with her friends, neighbors, and grandchildren. These moments brought her happiness and allowed her to share her time and companionship with those she loved. She was also known as a good cook, and her meals were made with care and love, often bringing family together around the table.

Faith was an important part of Rutha's life, and she attended Garden City Free Will Baptist Church for many years until her health declined. Her church family and her faith were a source of strength and comfort to her throughout the years. She lived with a quiet but steady faith that guided her actions and shaped the way she cared for others.

Rutha Mae Lawson leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and devotion. Her life was a beautiful example of what it means to be faithful, hardworking, and deeply committed to family. She will be remembered always for her gentle heart, her friendly nature, and the many ways she made life brighter for those around her.
