Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Robert Clifton English, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and dedicated public servant, who passed away peacefully on May 29, 2026, at the age of 70. Born on July 27, 1955, in Wayne, MI, Robert lived a life characterized by unwavering dedication to his family and community.

Robert embarked on his professional journey in 1984 with the City of Wayne, beginning as a meter man. Through hard work and perseverance, he pursued further education that led him to ascend through the ranks to the positions of Director of Personnel, Assistant City Manager, and ultimately, City Manager, a role from which he retired in 2012. His commitment to public service was palpable, as he genuinely cared about the welfare of the residents he served and the community at large.

Described by many as a good man with a tender spirit, Robert found great joy in the love of his family. He is survived by his son, Robert (Stephanie) English Jr.; daughter, Susan (Mark) Dickerson; grandchildren, Callie English, Jack Dickerson, and Michael Dickerson; brother, Johnny (Linda) English; and sister, Mary Wint. He was known to his grandchildren as a teddy bear-loving and loyal, always ready to support them with warmth and kindness.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, Robert held a special fondness for all Detroit teams, with the Detroit Lions holding a cherished place in his heart. He proudly held season tickets for ten years, sharing countless moments of joy and camaraderie with friends and family while cheering for his favorite team.

Though Robert was a private man, his life revolved around the things he loved most: his work, his children, and the thrill of sports. His driven nature manifested in everything he undertook; once he set his mind to something, he pursued it with relentless determination.

In this time of mourning, we invite all who knew and loved Robert to come together to honor not only his memory but also the values of compassion and community he embodied. His kind spirit and dedication will be sorely missed but will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to call him family and friend.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Dorothy English.

A memorial service will be planned for a later date.
