Obituary

Richard Louis Gibson, a cherished family man, and respected community member, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on November 13, 2024, in Westland, MI, at the age of 87. Born on March 8, 1937, in Detroit, MI, to the late Paul and Mary Gibson, Richard's life was a testament to his loving, kind, and handy nature.

Richard's journey through life was shared with his beloved wife, Marilyn Gibson, whom he married on September 22, 1962. Their partnership was a beacon of love and commitment, and together they raised a family that became Richard's pride and joy. He was a devoted father to Linda Anne (Timothy) Rodgers, Thomas Edward (Lisa Ann) Gibson, and Daniel Anthony (Nancy) Gibson. His role as a father extended to his siblings, Carol (the late Marvin) Stark, the late Paul Preston (Janet) Gibson II, Mary Lou (Fred) Bryson, Nancy Bratton, and Kenneth Gibson, with whom he shared the bonds of childhood and a lifetime of memories.

Richard's legacy continued to flourish through his adoring grandchildren, Timothy R. Rodgers, Jacob A. Rodgers, Jeffrey J. Rodgers, Thomas A. (Amanda) Gibson, Alec E. P. Gibson, Michael R. S. Gibson, Devin L. C. Gibson, Taylor M. (Sean) Raney, and Anthony J. Gibson. He was also a doting great-grandfather to Kaylee, Willow, Alannah, Timothy, Jade, Maisie, Charlotte, Bethani, and Thomas. His love and guidance were the cornerstones that supported the growth and happiness of his family.

A patriot at heart, Richard served his country as a radio teletype operator in the US Army, stationed primarily at Fort Bliss. His time in the military instilled in him a sense of duty and honor that he carried throughout his life. After his service, Richard dedicated 42 years to Detroit Edison as a material coordinator, where his work ethic and commitment to excellence were evident to all who knew him.

Richard's interests and hobbies were as diverse as they were passionate. He was an avid card player, a camping enthusiast, and a skilled bowler. His home improvement projects were not just a pastime but a way to make life easier and more enjoyable for his entire family. Known as the family handyman, Richard could fix anything and took great pride in his ability to do so. His culinary skills were legendary, especially his awesome steak and the much-loved chicken in a basket that he grilled to perfection.

Riding bikes with Marilyn was one of Richard's favorite ways to spend time together, and he was a fervent supporter of the John Glenn wrestling team, serving as the former Booster President. His spirit of volunteerism was unmatched, as he eagerly volunteered for everything he could, always putting others before himself. As the Wagon Master for the Garden City Night Campers, Richard's leadership and camaraderie were invaluable.

Richard's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, kindness, and a knack for making things work. His presence was a comfort, his laughter a joy, and his skills a blessing to those around him. He will be remembered as a loving husband, a caring father, a doting grandfather, and a great-grandfather whose influence will continue to be felt for generations to come.

As we bid farewell to Richard Louis Gibson, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of moments that will be cherished forever. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to have known him. Richard's journey on earth may have ended, but his spirit remains a guiding light for all of us.
