Obituary

Richard Eugene Eberhart, known affectionately as Rich to his loved ones, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2026, at the age of 79 in Livonia, Michigan. Born on September 22, 1946, in Detroit, Michigan, Rich was the beloved son of the late Claremont and Florence Eberhart and a cherished brother to the late Allen (Elaine) and the late Donald, and his sister Dolores (the late Darrell).

Rich was a proud Army veteran who served his country from 1964 to 1967, including a tour in Korea during the Vietnam War. His commitment to his fellow veterans continued long after his service, as he became very involved with the local VFW - Harry Kehrer post 3323, where he was honored to serve as a post commander in the late '90s.

After his military service, Rich began a dedicated career with Ford, where he remained until his retirement in 1998. His passion for advocacy was undiminished as he took on roles within his UAW, serving as the Local Vice President and Local Veterans and Retirees Chairman. He was fiercely devoted to these roles, staying extremely involved as long as he was able.

Rich's life was one of deep love and commitment to his family. He met his beloved wife, Jan, through a serendipitous introduction by friends, and the two were inseparable since marrying on May 23, 1975. Together, they raised three children, Randy (Michele), Renate, and Ryan, imbuing in them the values of compassion and service that Rich himself exemplified. His joy multiplied with the birth of his grandson, Jack, whom he adored and cherished every moment spent with.

A man of varied interests, Rich was a devoted grandfather, a keen coin collector, and an avid birdwatcher. He found solace and joy in the simple pleasure of observing nature. Rich's compassionate nature was evident in his volunteer work at the VA hospital in Ann Arbor and his involvement in helping his sons with the Boy Scouts. His passion for politics, veteran's affairs, and UAW retirees was well-known, and he could often be found engrossed in the History Channel or MSNBC, staying informed and engaged with the world around him. His love for sitting in a rocking chair, any kind, was an endearing trait that brought comfort to him and his family.

Though he was quiet in his youth, Rich's voice grew stronger and louder with the birth of his children, a testament to the depth of his love and the strength of his convictions. His legacy is one of service, love, and dedication, and his memory will continue to inspire all who knew him.

Rich's life was a testament to the power of love, service, and commitment. He leaves behind a legacy that will be cherished and remembered by his loving wife, Jan; his children, Randy (Michele), Renate, and Ryan; his adored grandson, Jack; and his sister, Dolores. Rich's life was a beacon of dedication and love, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
