Obituary

Raymond Louis Gagnon, known affectionately to all as Ray, was the kind of man who could light up a room with his Elvis impression and then sweep you off your feet with his dance moves, all before you knew what hit you. Born on September 22, 1935, in Lansing, Michigan, Ray carried the kind of jovial spirit that made him the youngest 89-year-old anyone ever met. On November 29, 2024, Ray took his final curtain call in Westland, Michigan, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, love, and a little bit of rock 'n' roll.

Ray's life was a whirlwind love story that kicked off when Jackie, his future wife and then-waitress at his local lunch spot, caught his eye. After a whirlwind romance of just six weeks, they tied the knot on New Year's Eve in 1956, and for 62 years, they were inseparable until Jackie's passing in 2018. Together, they raised a family that includes their daughter Rayma, with her husband Dennis Hogan; daughter Pamela, with her husband Grant Sherman; and they cherished the memories of their son Scott, who predeceased them.

The family tree flourished with the addition of grandchildren Nicole, with her husband Jeff Jennings, and Jason, with his wife Morgan Laws, as well as Matthew Mesler. Ray was also a proud great-grandfather to Brooke and Alissa Jennings, the latter of whom he now joins in peace. His brother George "Mickey" Gagnon, along with his parents Virgil and Harriet Gagnon, also preceded him in this final adventure.

Ray was a proud Ford retiree, and enjoyed retirement for nearly 30 years. He served his country with honor and then continued his service through his beloved Knights of Columbus, where he was a staple at the Wayne Notre Dame Hall. If it was Wednesday, you'd find him exclaiming "What the...Fun!" at "Show me the Money," Thursday meant Euchre night, and by Friday, he was the star of karaoke, charming everyone with his renditions of "Jailhouse Rock."

Ray's love for his family was only matched by his love for being around people. He was the embodiment of generosity, always ready to lend a hand or crack a joke to brighten someone's day. His adventurous spirit meant he was always up for a good time, whether it was a spontaneous road trip or an impromptu performance.

Describing Ray as loving, generous, and adventurous barely scratches the surface. He was a man who never missed a beat, whether it was on the dance floor or in the hearts of those he met. His impressions, especially of Elvis, were not mere mimicry but a tribute to the joy and exuberance of life itself.

As we say goodbye to Ray, we can't help but smile through the tears, knowing that somewhere up there, he's probably teaching the angels how to do the Jailhouse Rock. His laughter, his warmth, and his indomitable spirit will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Raymond Louis Gagnon, you were truly one of a kind. Thank you for the memories, the music, and the moves. Keep dancing, King. Keep dancing.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
