Obituary

Philip Norman Flunder, known affectionately to all as Phil, embarked on his final adventure on September 27, 2024, leaving a legacy of laughter, love, and a trail of expertly crafted rocking chairs. Born on January 8, 1949, in the bustling city of Detroit, Michigan, Phil's journey began with a spark of mischief that would illuminate the lives of those around him for 75 wonderful years.

Phil's life was a tapestry woven with threads of joy and a good dose of humor. He was the kind of man who could find the funny side of any situation, and his laughter was as infectious as his personality. A proud Navy veteran, he served his country with the same dedication and spirit that he would later pour into his 36 years at General Motors. His colleagues knew him as the go-to guy for a hearty chuckle and a helping hand, a testament to his unwavering reliability.

In the heart of his beloved wife, Ruth, with whom he shared 52 years of marriage, Phil found his truest companion. High school sweethearts, they navigated life's ups and downs with a bond that was as unshakeable as it was inspiring. Together, they raised two daughters, Anne (John) and Heather (Steve).

Phil's  role as a grandfather was one he cherished deeply, crafting a world of wonder and excitement for Clayton, Connor, Grace, Morgan, Serena, and Sarah. Whether he was spinning tales to spark their imaginations or scaring them with his made-up stories around the campfire, he was the architect of their childhood adventures. His love for his family was as tangible as the cradle he made for his grandchildren, a symbol of his enduring presence in their lives

A special nod goes to Trena Mulligan, Phil's dear lifetime friend and neighbor. Their kids grew up together, and the shenanigans they got into could have filled a dozen sitcom seasons.

Phil was a man of deep faith. He lived his beliefs with such joy and humor that even the angels must have chuckled. His faith was as genuine as his smile.

A man of many interests, Phil was happiest when he was at his property up north. There, he was the king of his domain, riding his ATVs with the gusto of a man half his age, practicing archery with the precision of a modern-day Robin Hood, and finding peace in the simple pleasure of a campfire under the stars. His love for movies was well known, with a particular fondness for the kind that made you check under the bed before sleeping - scary, sci-fi, and horror were his genres of choice.

Reading was another of Phil's passions, with his nose often buried in the latest sci-fi novel or a book brimming with conspiracy theories. His mind was an ever-expanding universe, eager to explore the unknown and question the unexplained. And let's not forget his woodworking, a skill that he honed with the same patience and care that he applied to every aspect of his life. The rocking chairs he made for his grandchildren weren't just seats; they were thrones from which the next generation could dream and grow.

Phil's sister, Pam MacDonald, along with her children, Ethan and Avery, will remember him as the mischievous brother and fun-loving uncle who could turn a family gathering into an episode of spontaneous comedy. His presence was a steady force, a constant in a world of variables.

To encapsulate Phil's essence in mere words is like trying to catch a shooting star in your pocket - it's bright, it's magical, and it's fleeting. But if one were to try, the words loving, adventurous, and funny would come closest to describing this remarkable man. He was a jokester, a storyteller, and above all, a loving soul who left an indelible mark on the hearts of those he touched.

Phil's departure from this world is not an end, but a transformation into the countless stories and memories that will continue to echo through the laughter of his family and friends. His family take great comfort in knowing he is now home, in Heaven.  In the words of a true comedian, "Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened." And with Phil, oh, how we smiled.
