Norma Joan Winkles (Brock) who everyone called Joan or Joanie, passed away on November 24, 2021 at age 87 in Westland, Michigan. Joan was born on February 26, 1934 in Rome, Georgia. She is survived by two sons, Ben (Debbie) Winkles, Ken (Brenda) Winkles; six grandchildren, Lauren, Tommy, Hope, Hannah, Marah and Shane; cousin, Tootsie; and many nieces and nephews including Sandie (Windell) McLendon. She is preceded in death by father, Charlie Brock, Sr.; mother, Elizabeth Brock; husband, Tommie Winkles; brothers, Tot, Ike, Harper; and sisters, Frances, Margaret and Ann.
Joan spent her childhood in Georgia, raised on a farm with her 6 brothers and sisters. While working McLennan's store, she met Tommie and it was love at first sight. After a short courtship, they were married on April 6, 1962 and shared nearly 45 years filled with love and laughter. In 1964, the happy couple moved to Michigan with their young son and another baby on the way. They made Westland Michigan their home and raised the children there. Joan and Tommie's home was always welcoming. She would often cook more food than she thought she needed because they never knew who might walk through the door to share in their company.
Joan worked for the Wayne-Westland School District for over 40 years starting as a part time lunch lady in the mid 70's. She was a food service attendant at many of the schools within the district but worked at Wayne Memorial High School for the longest period. She finally retired at the age of 80 and was the oldest employee of the district at the time. In the kitchen she was affectionately known as the Queen Bee.
Joan cherished her family more than anything, especially her grandchildren. She would take pride in all of their accomplishments and attended many concerts, sporting events, recitals and ceremonies over the years. She was loved and respected by many and will be deeply missed by all she has touched through the years.
