Obituary

Naomi Gibson Cole

8/27/1941 - 2/4/2024

Naomi Cole of Buckhorn, Kentucky, passed away peacefully at the age of 82 on Sunday, February 4th, surrounded by her children.

Family was at the center of everything Naomi did. The 47 greatest years of her life were spent married to Ed Cole and building their beautiful family together: the children, Felecia (Benny) Abner, Edwina (Brandon) Caywood, Teina (Vern) LaBean, and Dwayne (Angela) Cole, and the grandchildren, Charles (Hannah) Abner, Cody (Ashley) Abner, Heather Cole, Natasha Abner, Jacob Caywood, and Ashley (Greg) Cattell, Crystal (Valerie) LaBean, Michael Deel, Matthew (Nicki) Deel, and Adam Weinberg. Naomi also had the rare pleasure of meeting her grandchildren's children, and she gifted her love to 17 great-grandchildren for the last 22 years of her life.

Naomi loved people and she used her southern charms to help any customer at Kmart and to become everyone's favorite teller at National City bank. She was also a proud breast cancer survivor. In addition to her love of family, she was an enthusiast for Sunday breakfasts and spaghetti, with a passionate commitment to looking good, at all times — hair and makeup done up to perfection with shoes to match every outfit. Though she was unquestionably a bit of a diva, she was also one of the most selfless people in the world and would do anything for anybody, no matter what it took for her.

Naomi was the baby of the famous Gibson sisters, and she is preceded in death by Essie Johnson, Marylee (Alex) Johnson, Sally (Tom) Estes, Louise (Roscoe) Smith, Grace (Monroe) Smith, Martha (Hershel) Smith, Betty (Claude) Gay, Ruth (Bud) Deaton, as well as her brother, Astor Gibson, and their parents, Holt and Myrtle Gibson. She is survived by her beloved sister Bobbie Jo (Charles) Stewart.

She is also preceded in death by her husband Ed and their beautiful daughter, Shana Ruth. While she was sad to leave the family members who are still with us here on earth, she spent many years looking forward to reuniting with Ed and Shana, and we know that the three of them are finally at rest together.

A viewing will take place from 4pm-8pm on Thursday, February 8th, at Uht Funeral Home (35400 Glenwood Rd, Westland, MI 48186). Family members are additionally welcome starting at 3pm.

The funeral service will be held at 1pm on Saturday, February 10th, at Johnson United Baptist Church (2632 Middle Fork River Rd, Buckhorn KY 41721) with a luncheon for family to follow at the Buckhorn Children's Center dining room. An additional viewing will take place before the service from 11am-1pm, with 11am-12pm reserved for family.
