Miriam Rose Shurlow, a cherished mother, beloved educator, and devoted community member, passed away on August 29, 2026, at the age of 95. Born December 29, 1930, on a dairy farm in West Lafayette, Ohio, to Ezra and Lelia Hinds, Miriam lived a life dedicated to nurturing others, both in her family and through her vocation as a teacher.
A proud alumna of the University of Cincinnati, Miriam earned her undergraduate degree before furthering her education with a master's degree from the University of Michigan. She devoted decades to the noble profession of teaching, impacting the lives of countless students in Keen, Ohio public schools, at Michigan State Normal (now Eastern Michigan University), and with the Wayne-Westland Public Schools.
Miriam was not only an exemplary educator but also a vital part of her community. She was a dedicated member of the First Congregational Church of Wayne, where she served as a deacon and chaired various committees, including Women's Fellowship, the kitchen, and the church fair. Her talents shone brightly as she participated in the choir and the bell choir, enriching the spiritual life of her congregation. In addition, she was an election inspector for the city of Wayne and sang with the Wayne-Westland Chorus for many years. She was recognized with the prestigious Diamond of the Community Award for her unwavering commitment to the city of Wayne.
Her passion extended to service beyond her church; she devoted her time to Habitat for Humanity, actively participating in building homes for those in need. An avid knitter, crocheter, and seamstress, Miriam's creativity extended to gardening as a member of the Wayne Garden Club. For just over 40 years the Shurlow family enjoyed time at their cottage on Peach Lake in West Branch, Michigan. After retirement, Miriam enjoyed traveling with Elder Hostel Tours, making memories that would last a lifetime.
Miriam was a devoted wife to her late husband, Burton Shurlow, a loving mother to her children, Carol Shurlow, William (Linda) Shurlow, and Jacquelyn (Shawn) Hallinan, and a proud grandmother to her six grandchildren: Bridget, Dustin, Megan, David, Julia, and the late Christian. She also reveled in the joy brought by her nine great-grandchildren.
Miriam is preceded in death by parents, Ezra Hinds and Lelia Hinds, husband, Burton Shurlow, sisters Grace and Wroena, brother Francis and grandson, Christian.
Miriam's legacy is one of love, compassion, and dedication. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Please join the family for a Memorial Gathering at Uht Funeral Home on September 17, 2026 from 6:00pm - 9:00pm. A Memorial Service will be held on September 18, 2026 at First Congregational Church of Wayne at 11:00am.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make memorial contributions in honor of Miriam to Habitat for Humanity, Women's Fellowship First Congregational Church of Wayne, or Champions of Wayne, The Guidance Center.

A burial will take place at a later date in West Lafayette, Ohio at Fairfield Cemetery.
