Matthew Michael
Gabruk
December 27, 1957 – July 24, 2024
Matthew Michael Gabruk, "Matt", departed this world on July 24, 2024, in Westland, Michigan, wrapping up a life marked by fun, joy, and a profound love for sports and family. Born on December 27, 1957, in Syracuse, New York, Matt's charismatic presence began to be felt from a young age and continued to resonate throughout his 66 years.
A proud alumnus of East Syracuse - Minoa High School, Class of 1976, Matt's journey in academia did not cease there. He furthered his studies at Clarkson University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting in 1980. His intellectual pursuits, however, were but one aspect of his multifaceted life. He carried his affection for New York and Syracuse to the many places he called home throughout his life.
Matt's vivacity and outgoing nature were the cornerstones of his personality. Known for being the life of the party, he never missed an opportunity to engage with others, leaving a lasting impression of kindness and friendliness. He had an uncanny ability to lighten the room with charm, silly dad jokes, and his infamously loud and endearing laughter. His spirit was extraordinary, and his ability to make friends was second to none.
A passionate sports enthusiast, Matt devoted much of his leisure time to cheering on his favorite Detroit teams, as well as Syracuse University and Michigan State University, whether it was a quiet evening at home or an energetic gathering at a sports venue. This passion extended to his role as a parent, as he stood as the biggest fan of his children, never missing an event and often being the most enthusiastic supporter of their pursuits and accomplishments.
He spent a great deal of time at his cottage in northern Michigan, where he enjoyed sunny memories boating, days at the beach with his radio and umbrella, taking in the Fourth of July parades, and barbeques, bonfires, ski and snowmobile trips with his family.
Matt was predeceased by his parents, Matthew J. Gabruk and Nan A. Gabruk, as well as his sister, Janice Martin. He is survived by his ex-wife and friend, Kathy Gabruk, with whom he shared over 25 years of marriage, and their children: Jonathan Gabruk, Maggie (Thomas) Cochran, and Marissa (James) Berta. His legacy continues through his adored grandson, Bradley, and his sisters, Lori (Mike) Lefeve and Ann (Mike) Casler. He leaves behind a tapestry of relationships with numerous nieces, nephews, and friends, each of whom held a special place in his heart, and for whom he cared deeply.
Matt's life was a celebration of family, friendship, love, and laughter. His absence will be profoundly felt, but his memory will continue to inspire and uplift those who were fortunate enough to know him. The world has indeed lost a remarkable man, but the echoes of his laughter and the memories of his warmth will remain eternal.
As we bid farewell to Matthew Michael Gabruk, we reflect on a life well-lived, filled with spirited joy, robust perseverance, and a love of family. He lived a life that exemplified genuine human connection, and for that, we are all grateful. Rest in peace, Matt, and may your spirit continue to be as colorful and enduring as the legacy you've left behind.
