Obituary

Larry Allen Edmunds, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2024, in Wayne, Michigan, at the age of 78. Born on October 27, 1945, in Madisonville, Kentucky, to the late Bill and Faye Edmunds, Larry's life was a testament to the power of love, faith, and service.

Larry's journey led him from the halls of Wayne Memorial High School, where he graduated in 1964. Larry and Arleen's love story began shortly after in 1970 and blossomed into a lifelong partnership of over 49 years after they wed on December 21, 1974. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Jessica (Doug) Hammond and Curtis Edmunds, and delighted in the joy of their grandchildren, Marleigh, Beckton, and Kellen Hammond.

Larry's professional life was marked by dedication and excellence. He began his career at Wayne Automotive, then moved to the Ford Livonia Transmission Plant, and finally as a printer at Ypsilanti Press before committing over 40 years to the People's Community Hospital Authority, later known as Oakwood Hospital. His work ethic and reliability made him a respected figure among his colleagues and within the community.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Larry was a man of many interests and talents. Mechanically inclined, he could often be found building, plumbing, or wiring-skills that he put to good use in his own home and in the service of others. His passion for cars and motorcycles was evident, having owned over 250 vehicles in his lifetime. Yet, it was his role as a devoted Christian and active member of the Church of Christ of Garden City that truly defined him. Larry served as an educational director and deacon, embodying the scripture,Ecclesiastes 12:7 KJV  "Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was; and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it."

Travel was a joy for Larry and Arleen, exploring new places and creating memories together. His willingness to help strangers, friends, and family alike was unwavering, and his ability to socialize with friends every day was a source of happiness for him and for those he encountered. Larry was also a gifted storyteller with an impeccable memory, traits that endeared him to all who had the pleasure of listening to his tales.

Those who knew Larry will remember him as a natural-born helper, whether he was babysitting his grandkids-earning him the title of the best "Poppie" any grandkid could dream of-or tending to his beloved cats. His loving nature, faith-filled life, and handy skills made him a pillar in the lives of many.

Larry is survived by his loving wife, Arleen; his children, Jessica (Doug) Hammond and Curtis; his adored grandchildren,Marleigh, Beckton and Kellen Hammond; his brothers, Stan (Mary) and James (Carol) Edmunds; sister-in-law, Laura (David) Wayman; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, family, friends, and brothers and sisters in Christ. He was a beacon of love and faith, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched.

As we bid farewell to Larry Allen Edmunds, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of love, laughter, and selfless service. He was the embodiment of the best virtues one could aspire to, and his memory will forever be a blessing to us all.

In lieu of flowers, please go out of your way to visit a friend, help a stranger, be giving of your time to others, sit and feed the squirrels, feed and love on a neighborhood cat, go to church to make yourself right with God. All of these things would be honoring of Larry and this would make him smile down from heaven and would bless our family greatly. This is what our dad would want you to do.
