Obituary

Kerran Francis Ryan of Wayne, Michigan peacefully passed away on November 24, 2023 at the age of 91. He was born in Detroit on October 26, 1932 to the late Cornelius and Marion Ryan.

Kerran was the oldest of three children. He's predeceased by his two sisters, Joanne and Kathy, and his wife of 53 years, Dee. He is survived by his daughters, Maggie Akelis-Ryan and Maureen (Tim) Gravgaard, his step-daughters, whom he raised, Jamie England and Julie (Don) Rothermel-Osugi; eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, nine nieces and nephews and their children.

Kerran was a veteran of the Korean War entering into the Marine Corps in 1950. Instead of going to Korea, he was part of the 8th Fleet Marine Force and was stationed in the Mediterranean. His expertise was machine gun. Toward the end of his service his division was chosen to go out to Nevada and witness one of the first Atomic Bomb testings.

Kerran worked for the United States Post Office for over 30 years until his retirement in 1988. He started as a Letter Carrier and worked his way up to Supervisor then to his final role as Route Examiner. After retirement he worked briefly as a driver for the Wayne-Oakland Library Federation. After retiring the second time, he and his wife took the opportunity to travel in their motorhome.

His favorite past times were reading, photography, investing in the school system by purchasing PowerBall and Mega Millions tickets and working on his ongoing Opera-Ballet with singing and dancing. He brought joy to the family with his quick wit and the same ten stories of his time in the Marines and Post Office. Kerran was also the calm voice when things were chaotic. His actions spoke much louder than his words.

He will be deeply missed by everyone who has known him for several years or a few minutes.
