Obituary

Joan Frances Plevek, 93, of Canton, Michigan, passed away on April 8, 2022, in Canton.  Joan was born in Chicago, Illinois to John and Mary DeKlerk on April 1, 1929.

The family moved to Michigan when Joan was young and she attended Roseville High School and graduated in 1947.  Upon graduation Joan furthered her education at Michigan Normal College, now known as Eastern Michigan University.  Her degree was in Elementary Education.  Joan would begin her teaching career and while having a family and working, she was able to complete her Masters Degree, also in Elementary Education.

Joan taught and influenced the minds of children for 34 years while working in the Wayne/Westland School District.  Her work had lifelong effects on many young people.  At work you might find her in the Teachers Lounge beating the other teachers in Scrabble - a challenging game she mastered and played even when she was 92!

On March 17 th , 1951 Joan married Phillip Plevek and they were married for 43 years before went home to be with The Lord on April 29, 1994.

She also enjoyed golfing, reading, gardening and playing Bridge.  Her involvement in the community included the Jaycees, the Wayne Garden Club, Girl Scouts and Brownies.

Spiritually, Joan trusted in The Lord Jesus Christ as her personal savior.  She could often be seen reading her Bible, or helping people.  Her faith was real.  She attended, served, and supported First Baptist Church of Canton, and New Life Bible Baptist Church of Ypsilanti.

Joan is survived by three children, her daughter Karen (Robert) Mack, son Phillip (Laura) Plevek, daughter Susan (Craig) Roderick; six grandchildren Aaron (Audrey) Mack, Carie (Michael) Russell, Andrea (Lindsey) Plevek, Phillip D. Plevek, Jose Roderick and Nicandro Roderick, 18 great grandchildren (18), nieces Christine (Russell) May, Kathy (Tom) Foot, Cherie Plevek, nephews Stephen (Sheila) DeKlerk, Richard Michael DeKlerk, brother-in-law John H. Plevek.

Preceding her in death are her parents John and Mary DeKlerk, her husband Phillip G. Plevek, her daughter Janet D. Plevek, her brother Richard DeKlerk, her sister-in-law Mary DeKlerk, sister-in-law Phyllis Watts, brother-in-law Jack Watts, Father-in-law Phillip F. Plevek, mother-in-law Amy Plevek, sister-in-law Marsha Kandt, and niece Lisa DeKlerk.

Visitation and service will be held at UHT Funeral Home, 35400 Glenwood Rd, Wayne, Michigan. Visitation times are Thursday April 14th from 4 pm to 8 pm; and Friday April 15th from 12:00 pm to 2 pm.   Funeral service will be held at 2 pm Friday, April 15 th .  Rev. Robert W. Mack, Pastor New Life Bible Baptist Church will be conducting the service.
