January 3, 1953 – October 21, 2025
Joan Carol Nystrom, a beacon of warmth and wisdom, passed away peacefully on October 21, 2025, in Dearborn, MI, at the age of 72. Born on January 3, 1953, in McKeesport, PA, Joan was the cherished daughter of the late Harold and Virginia Nystrom. Sister to Debra Nystrom (Thomas Drake) and Janet (Jerry) Schellenberger and aunt to her nephews Joshua Drake, Andrew Drake, Harold Colin Drake, and Philip Drake. Her life was marked by a dedication to education, faith, and the joy of family and sports.
Joan's early years in Westland laid the foundation for a life of service and community. Her infectious laughter and kindhearted nature were gifts to all who knew her. After completing her education, Joan devoted her professional life to nurturing young minds as a teacher within the Archdiocese of Detroit. Her passion for teaching and her unwavering commitment to her students left an indelible mark on countless lives.
Her faith was as steadfast as her dedication to education. A lifelong member of the Kirk of our Savior Presbyterian Church, Joan's spiritual life was deeply interwoven with her daily actions. She served her church community with the same love and vigor that she brought to her classroom, embodying the principles of her faith through acts of kindness and charity.
Joan's love extended beyond her human family to her two beloved cats, Shawn and Sylvester. They were her constant companions, providing joy and comfort throughout her years.
An avid Detroit sports fan, Joan's enthusiasm for her teams was contagious. She celebrated their victories with gusto and remained loyal through every season, embodying the spirit of true sportsmanship.
Joan Carol Nystrom lived a life rich with love, learning, and faith. Her legacy is one of compassion, resilience, and the unyielding belief in the goodness of others. As we bid farewell to this extraordinary woman, we take solace in the knowledge that her spirit will continue to guide and inspire us. Joan's journey on earth has ended, but her story - one of love, dedication, and joy - will resonate forever in the hearts of those who were blessed to know her.
