Obituary

James Edward Wright, known to all as Jim, brought laughter and light to the world from the moment he was born on December 18, 1946, in Florence, Alabama. On August 1, 2024, at the age of 77, Jim completed his final act in Ann Arbor, Michigan, leaving behind a legacy of joy and friendship that could rival any stand-up comedy legend.

Jim's life was a masterclass in the art of joy. As a proud Army veteran and former Military Police officer, he served his country with the same vigor that he would later channel into his jokes and storytelling. It was during his service in Germany that he wrote letters to his future wife, Juanita, with the charm and wit that would later define their 56-year marriage, beginning with their wedding on April 4, 1968, just two months after his return home.

Jim's family was his greatest joy. He is survived by his beloved wife, Juanita, and their daughter, Melissa, and her husband, Kevin Whittenberg. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Kevin Jr. (Blair), Brandon, Edina,  and Lexi Whittenberg, and his great-grandchildren, Alianna and Donnie. Jim also leaves behind his brothers, Larry with his wife Beverly, and Donald with his wife Anita. He was predeceased by his parents, James and Pauline Wright, his brother Richard, and sister Betty Butler. Jim will be fondly remembered by his numerous nieces, nephews, and a wide circle of friends, all of whom were touched by his kindness and jovial spirit.

Jim's zest for life didn't stop at family; it soared to 10,000 feet as a licensed pilot for over 50 years. His love for flying was only matched by his passion for rhythm as a talented drummer, whether it was playing in a band or keeping the beat in his high scho

ol band. He was the kind of guy who could tell a joke with a straight face, then break into a drum solo without missing a beat.

When he wasn't flying or drumming, Jim could be found with a fishing pole in one hand and a golf club in the other, not simultaneously, of course, although he'd be the first to joke about trying. Monday and Friday nights were sacred, reserved for WWE matches that were as much a part of his routine as his legendary storytelling.

Jim never met a stranger, a testament to his outgoing nature and friendly demeanor. He was the kind of person who could make friends in an elevator and have you laughing by the time you reached your floor. His ability to find humor in everything was infectious, and he spread that joy as though it was his personal mission in life.

The stories he told were epic sagas, filled with punchlines and pauses for dramatic effect. He loved all jokes-good, bad, dad, and everything in between. To say that Jim was funny, kind, and friendly would be an understatement. He was the embodiment of those words, living them out loud every single day.

As we bid farewell to Jim, we imagine him cracking jokes with the angels, or perhaps teaching them a thing or two about timing. His memory will live on as the laughter echoes and the stories are retold, each one infused with the love and humor that he shared so generously.

James "Jim" Edward Wright, you were the life of every party, the joy in every room, and the smile on the faces of those who had the pleasure of knowing you. Your final curtain call may have come, but the encore will continue in our hearts and memories forever. Thank you for the laughter, the love, and the lessons in finding the funny in life's every moment. Curtain down, applause up, and on to the next stage, where the spotlight surely awaits you.
