Janis Gailey
Rychlinski
November 22, 1933 – April 27, 2023
Janis Rychlinski of Wayne, Michigan peacefully joined many beloved family members and friends on April 27, 2023 at the age of 89 after a prolonged illness.
Janis was born in Monongahela, Pennsylvania to Lois Williams and Joseph Campayno. She was greatly influenced by her grandfather and guardian angel Samuel Gailey (Pap-Pap). As a teenager, Janis moved to Detroit, Michigan, where while working at Ready Power she met and married the love of her life Raymond Rychlinski. They moved in with Ray's mom, Martha, who loved Janis dearly and taught her to play a ruthless hand of pinochle and cook authentic Polish food such as kielbasa, pierogi, golabki, potato pancakes, and her famous kruschiki. She joined the Catholic Church upon marriage and raised her family at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Wayne. She was a woman of faith.
Janis was the predominant figure skating director at the Wayne Community Center for 20 years. She was ahead of her time building up the program and figure skating in the state of Michigan. She initiated and won the bid for the Ice Skating Institute of America National Championships in 1985. She brought Special Olympics to the area, providing classes and skating competitions. She produced large skating exhibitions, starring skating icons such as JoJo Starbuck, Richard Dwyer, and Scott Hamilton. Along the way, she created a multi-generational skating family of pro's, skaters, and parents. All from the small city of Wayne, Michigan.
Janis was the hostess and chef in perpetual motion for many large family gatherings, loved gardening, musicals, and attended every Neil Diamond concert that came to Detroit. Her family legacy spreads across the United States and she is survived by 4 children, Curt (Teresa), Denny, Mark (Sharon), and Darcy; 8 grandchildren, Catherine (Nate), Joshua (Liz), Mysti, Eric, Vanessa, Marla, Nadia and Maya; and 8 great-grandchildren, Allen, Chloe, Carter, Brayden, James, Kaytlin, Isaac and Caleb. She also is survived by sisters Linda (Bob), Claire, Rita, and Lois, and her dear niece Kathey and sister-in-law Lillian.
Janis joins her husband, Ray, granddaughter Elizabeth, parents and siblings Jeanne, Laurie, Jack, Sam, and many family and friends in heaven. We are sure that there is a lot of celebrating taking place at and around the pinochle table.
