Obituary

Janet Louise McMurray lived a life defined by love and kindness, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew her. Warm and affable, she possessed a natural ability to forge meaningful connections with everyone she met.

Affectionately known by her grandchildren as "Gmac," she was a constant source of support, encouragement, and inspiration. Whatever her grandkids were interested in, she pursued that alongside them, following the Detroit Tigers, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, art, nature, poetry, and music, and attending hundreds of their sporting events. She sent thoughtful care packages filled with homemade cookies and other dorm room necessities to her grandkids while they were in college. Even in her later years, her home remained a vibrant hub of activity. Her grandchildren and their friends frequently gathered there to enjoy her gourmet mac and cheese, empanadas, and pumpkin bread, or to work out in her basement gym. She even graciously hosted AP study sessions for her grandkids and their classmates. As one of those friends shared, "GMac was everybody's grandma."

Janet's thoughtfulness was often expressed through her beautiful embroidery. She delighted in creating personalized gifts for her loved ones, including pillowcases, monogrammed pajamas, tablecloths, quilt tops, bookmarks, handkerchiefs, tote bags, and wall hangings.

Born on December 19, 1942, Janet married the love of her life, Franklin McMurray, on February 18, 1961. Together, they created a beautiful life, cherishing time with their family and grandchildren. They built their dream home in Chelsea, MI, and enjoyed traveling together; annual trips to Mexico and memorable visits to Santa Fe, Jackson Hole, Ireland, France, Spain, and their cottage in west Michigan were among their favorite adventures.

Beyond her primary role in raising her family, Janet was a dedicated professional and a passionate lifelong learner. After earning her Associate Degree from Schoolcraft College, she built a respected career as an Accredited Record Technician and hospital supervisor, serving both the Michigan Osteopathic Medical Center (MOMC) and the State of Michigan. She deeply valued education and led by example, returning to her studies in her thirties and again in her sixties. This intellectual curiosity continued well into her retirement as she studied history at Washtenaw Community College. A standout student who consistently earned all A's, Janet was highly regarded by her professors for her sharp insights and warmly embraced by her younger classmates for her kindness and friendly demeanor.

Janet was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 42 years, Franklin McMurray Sr.; her sister Sue (Ernie); her daughter, Melissa Loniewski (Ed); and her parents, Robert and Betty Quinn. Her legacy continues through her three sons: Franklin McMurray Jr. (Debbie), Ben McMurray (Noreen Hanlon), and Eric McMurray (Holly). She is also survived by her siblings, Barbara Perry (Jim), Kathy Hayes (Roger), Deborah Roland (Chuck), Linda Quinn, and Robert Quinn (Nadine). Janet was a loving grandmother to Kaitlin Hinderer (Jess), Alex McMurray (Snigdha), Libbey McMurray, Tess Loniewski (Conor Garrison), Carly Loniewski, Matthew Loniewski, Bennett Loniewski, Aidan McMurray (Maddie), Emma McMurray, Jackson McMurray (Summer Badrak), Sullivan McMurray, Penelope McMurray, Calliope McMurray, Elliot McMurray, and Maxton McMurray. She also leaves behind her great-granddaughter, Marigold "Goldie" McMurray, many cherished nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, and many others who affectionately called her "GMac."

Janet's family expresses their deepest gratitude for the exceptional care she received from the teams at Trinity Hospitals in Ann Arbor and Brighton, the University of Michigan, and Trinity Hospice.

Services will be held at Uht Funeral Home, located at 35400 Glenwood Road, Westland, Michigan. The family will receive visitors on Friday, August 28 from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday, August 29, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service. The service will be at 1:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, Breakthrough T1D, the March of Dimes, or the Trevor Project in Janet's honor.
