Obituary

James Willis Spurlock Jr., a cherished father, son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away on February 15, 2026, at the age of 48. Born on October 16, 1977, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, James's life was one of dedication, humor, and kindness. He departed this world in Livonia, Michigan, leaving behind a legacy of love and craftsmanship that will be remembered by all who knew him.

James grew up in a close-knit family and was preceded in death by his father, James W. Spurlock Sr. He is survived by his beloved mother, Josephine Spurlock; his adored daughter, Samantha Spurlock; his caring sister, Lori (Troy) Broniman; his nephew, Nathan Broniman; his niece, Tori (Danny Vallejo) Broniman; his great-niece, Josephine, and his aunt Judy Blevins, who all held a special place in his heart.

For many years, James honed his skills as a cobblestone mason, a trade that demanded precision, strength, and patience. His work, often seen as a form of art, can be found in the pathways and edifices that beautify his community. He took immense pride in each project he completed, believing that the effort he put into his craft was always worthwhile. His contributions to the local landscape are a testament to his meticulous nature and his passion for enduring beauty.

James's love for the outdoors was evident to anyone who knew him. He found solace in the simple pleasure of being outside, whether it was tending to his yard, walking in the park, or sitting quietly in his backyard. His connection to nature was a source of peace and rejuvenation for him.

Animals were another of James's great loves. His pets were more than companions; they were family members who added joy and comfort to his life. His gentle and caring nature was reflected in the way he nurtured and cared for each of them.

Known for his sense of humor, James could light up a room with his wit and laughter. He was also known for his stubbornness-a trait that served him well in his determination to achieve the best in his work and life. Yet, above all, James was kind. His readiness to help others, regardless of the circumstances, was a hallmark of his character. His generosity of spirit made a lasting impact on his family, friends, and community.

James Willis Spurlock Jr. will be deeply missed by those who were fortunate enough to know him. His memory will live on in the stories told, the laughter shared, and the beautiful stonework that graces the paths on which we walk. As we say goodbye to James, we take comfort in knowing that his was a life well-lived, full of purpose, joy, and love.
