James Louis Nicolai of Wayne, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, peacefully passed away on May 7, 2026. He was born on July 10, 1946, in Detroit, Michigan and leaves behind a rich legacy of love, generosity, and cherished memories that will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
James met his soulmate, Patricia, while sitting in front of her in government class at Wayne Memorial High School. Their friendship blossomed into a beautiful love story, culminating in their wedding on September 3, 1966. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, adventure, and unwavering support for one another.
A dedicated electrician by trade, James approached his work with the same passion and care that defined every aspect of his life. His commitment to family was unparalleled; he created countless cherished memories by taking his family on vacations each year, remembering always the joy of togetherness.
James' generosity extended far beyond his family. He dedicated significant time to volunteer work with Hospice of Michigan and was actively involved in St. Michael Lutheran Church, where he shared his love and compassion with those in need. He also embraced the opportunity to help with prison ministry, demonstrating his belief in hope and redemption. He was also active in the Via de Cristo movement.
An adventurer at heart, James found joy in flying as a private pilot and had a passion for sailing. He also had a life-long love of classic cars, proudly enjoying his vintage 1964 GTO and spending weekends captivated by the thrill of drag racing.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia Nicolai; children Deborah (Steve) Gush, Steven Nicolai, and Dana Parks; grandchildren Eric Schmitt, Jessica Gush, Stephen Gush; great-grandchildren Titan Schmitt, Caleb Murphy, and Aubree Murphy; his sister Sally (Marrianne Thomsen) Nicolai; and his niece Liza Lajoice and nephew David Orwin.
As we remember Jim, let us celebrate his spirit of love, his kindness, and the moments that made life so beautiful. He will be deeply missed, yet his light will shine on in the hearts of everyone he touched.
James was preceded in death by his parents Louis and Charlotte Nicolai.
