Obituary

James Kenneth Campbell, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on September 23, 2025, at the age of 86 in Westland, Michigan. Born on January 24, 1939, in Bad Axe, Michigan, to the late Kenneth James Campbell and the late Florence Ruth Hoff, Jim grew up with a deep appreciation for family and the simple joys of life.

Jim's journey through life was marked by his unwavering love and dedication to his family. He was the beloved husband of nearly 64 years to Beverly Campbell, a bond that was a testament to their enduring love and mutual respect. Together, they raised two wonderful daughters, Julie (Donald) Wellman and Leslie VanNeste (David Jones), who brought immense pride and joy to his life. His sister, Joyce McVeigh, shared in the family's cherished memories and moments of laughter.

A proud grandfather, Jim's legacy continued through his grandchildren, Matthew Wellman (Heather Weismann), Laura (Jason) Bane, Nathan VanNeste, and Jamie VanNeste, and he was blessed to see the family tree flourish with the addition of his great-grandchildren, Jonathan (Maggie) Bane, Ryan Bane, Avery Bane, Elaina Wellman, Lauren Wellman, and Wyatt Wellman. Each of them held a special place in his heart, and he took great delight in their accomplishments and adventures. Jim had several beagles throughout his life, all of which could have been said to have won the dog lottery by having him as their owner. His current beagle, Jasper, has been a light in Jim's life and a beloved family member to all.

Jim's working life was characterized by his strong work ethic and reliability, retiring after 20 years as a dedicated truck driver with US Food Service. His commitment to his work was paralleled by his involvement in the community, where he served as the past president of the Romulus Horseshoe Club. His skill and passion for the game were evident as he proudly held the title of Michigan Class C Horseshoe Champion.

Beyond his professional and community achievements, Jim was a man of many interests. He had a love for horseshoes, and his bowling prowess was nearly unmatched, with high games of 298 and 299. Metal detecting, fishing, and camping were among his favorite pastimes, with Taylor's Beach campground being a frequent family destination. His teenage years spent working on a farm instilled in him a love for the outdoors and an appreciation for hard work. Those who knew Jim would often find him humming his favorite tune, "Zip-A-Dee-Do-Dah," a song that perfectly encapsulated his optimistic outlook on life.

Jim was a man whose presence was synonymous with love and kindness. His gentle spirit and generous heart left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him. As we remember James Kenneth Campbell, we celebrate a life lived with purpose, love, and a touch of song. His memory will continue to inspire and guide us, just as the melody of his favorite song promised a wonderful day ahead.
