Glen Howard
Squire, Sr.
July 7, 1931 – January 4, 2024
Glen Howard Squire Sr. of Ocala, Florida, passed away at his home on January 4th, 2024. He was 92 years old. Glen was born July 7th, 1931, in Detroit, to the late Edward Villierse Squire Jr. and Kathryn May Frisbie.
Glen served in the United States Army alongside his identical twin, Gene. They returned from basic training and married their respective life partners on June 7th, 1952. Soon after, Glen and Gene shipped out to Germany and arrived home safely to their new brides, together.
Glen dabbled in various side gigs while working diligently at Ford Motor Company for 31 years. On Monday, December 2nd, in the thick of the Detroit Blizzard of 1974, Glen was met by the only other person at the entire plant, a security guard. "What are you doing here?!", the guard exclaimed. "I really didn't want to end my perfect attendance streak", Glen replied.
Once retired to Florida, Glen found joy in his part-time job at Phil's Electric in Ocala. His family found slightly less joy in all of his home electricity experiments, and will think of him with laughter every time they have to try three different switches to find the correct one.
With an unyielding work ethic and an insatiable sweet tooth, you could often find Glen ending his busy days with a Boston Cooler. Like most things in life, he especially appreciated when this indulgence was shared with those he loved.
A man who endured a difficult childhood, Glen spent his later years ensuring every child in his life knew just how valuable they were, and how valuable their mothers were. This included children and their grown-ups that he encountered fleetingly at rest stops, restaurants, gas stations, sidewalks, airports...
An attentive, actively involved parent, grandparent, and great-grandparent, his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will remember him as a man who practiced just exactly what he preached, "There is nothing more important than family. Nothing."
Glen is survived by children Marlene Marie Squire, Glen Howard Squire Jr.(Adriana), and Karlene Kathryn Squire-Mullins (Ken Franklin) as well as beloved sister-in-law, Beverly Squire, plus nine nieces and nephews. He is also survived by grandchildren Michael (Krysta) Smith, Laura (Jack) Moss, Christopher (Amanda) Kaniski; Traci (Rudy) Thingvold, Daniel Squire; Rob (Javonne) Mullins, Tara Mullins-Cosme (Joel Cosme Jr.), Joshua Mullins (Kari) and many great-grandchildren, of which he was proud of every single one.
Glen was preceded in death by his spouse of sixty-seven years, Ruth Lila Squire, as well as siblings Edward Villierse Squire III, Gene John Squire Sr., Kenneth Alfred Squire Sr., Kathryn Edena Squire, son-in-law Bobby Mullins, and one niece.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Glen's "baby", Karlene, for providing five years of adventures and caregiving. They also thank Hospice of Marion County for enabling a team of family members to provide a dignified wrap-up to a life well lived.
Consider cracking open a Vernors or Dr. Pepper, and pause to remember Glen, in his own words- "Look around. Count your blessings. And love everyone."
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations, in memory of Ruth & Glen Squire Sr. to Hospice of Marion County, PO Box 4860, Ocala, FL 34478-4860, an organization committed to never sending a patient a bill.
