Obituary

Gladwin Keith Miller, a beacon of kindness and generosity, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2024, at the age of 95, in Wayne, Michigan. Born on May 5, 1929, in Britton, Michigan, Gladwin was a man whose life was marked by unwavering faith, a love for his family, and a dedication to his community.

Gladwin, affectionately known simply as "Red" to those who knew him best, was the son of the late Ervin and Madge Miller. He was a devoted husband, first to his beloved wife of 57 years, Julia Miller, who preceded him in death, and then to Anita Smith, with whom he shared ten wonderful years until her passing. Red was the cherished father of Robert (Rhonda) Miller, Richard (Kathleen) Miller, Mark Miller, and Steven (Linda) Miller. He was a proud grandfather and great-grandfather, leaving behind a legacy that includes Jonathan (Sarah) Miller, Anna (Andy Monefeldt) Miller, Kristen (Zach) Goldman, Lisa (Austin) Matero, Shannon, Joshua, Matthew (Jessica), Nathan (Melissa), Katherine, Andrew (Kasandra), Rebecca, Elliot, Lilah, Max, Julia, Alex, Beckham, Bodhi, Mya, Landon, Reid, Levi, Grayson, Mackenzie, and Madison.

Red was the last surviving sibling in a family of nine children. He was predeceased by his brothers Clifford, Charles, Paul, Lee, Eldon, Dale, and George Miller, and his sister Viola Durham. Although his siblings had passed before him, he held a special place in the hearts of many nieces and nephews who fondly remember his warmth and guidance.

After serving his country as an air force veteran, Red built a successful career as a process engineer in the automotive industry. His professional achievements were matched by his passion for serving his community. He was a faithful lay leader at the United Methodist Church of Wayne for many years, where his voice resonated in the church choir for over half a century. Red's deep faith was the cornerstone of his life, guiding him in service and fellowship.

An exceptional athlete, Red had the honor of playing baseball and basketball for the Air Force. His talent was evident when he earned the opportunity to try out for the St. Louis Cardinals. His love for sports was a thread that ran through his life, and he often shared his experiences and the lessons he learned on the field with his children and grandchildren.

Beyond his accomplishments, Red was a big family man who reveled in the joy of spending time with his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. His kind and friendly nature made him a beloved figure not only within his family but also in the wider community. Red's generosity of spirit was infectious, and he was always ready to lend a helping hand or a listening ear to anyone in need.

A man of many virtues, Red will be remembered for being faith-filled, kind, and generous. His presence enriched the lives of those around him, and his legacy of love and service will continue to inspire future generations. Though he has departed from this world, the memories of his laughter, wisdom, and unwavering support will remain a comforting presence in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Red's life was a testament to the enduring power of faith, the strength of family bonds, and the impact one individual can have through a life of service and love. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we celebrate the countless ways he touched our lives and the immeasurable joy he brought to so many. Gladwin "Red" Keith Miller's story is one of a life well-lived, and he will be dearly missed by all who were blessed to know him.
