Gilbert Jerome Merkel, age 93, of Ypsilanti, Michigan, passed away on April 8, 2026. He was born on September 25, 1932, in Detroit, Michigan, and lived a life marked by love, faith, hard work, and devotion to his family and friends.
He was the son of the late Edwin and Mary Merkel. Gilbert was preceded in death by his wife, the late Grace Marie Merkel, and by Judyann Merkel, the late wife and mother of his children. He was also preceded in death by his son Timothey Merkel; his siblings, the late Mildred Smith, Edwin Merkel, and Jeanette Merkel. He is survived by his sisters, Dorothy Bickes and Mary Kaspor, along with many loved ones who will cherish his memory.
Gilbert was a devoted husband, a great caregiver, and an amazing dad. He is survived by his children, Scheryll (Ed) Bonderenka, and Tania Rodriguez. He was a proud grandfather to Scott Jones, Caleb Bonderenka, Joshua Bonderenka, Charity Rodriguez, Brendi Wilkeson, Caridad Heath, Thatcher Rodriguez, Kenna Larson, and Timothey Rodriguez. He also leaves behind a large and loving family of great-grandchildren, Katia, Avalon, Chance, Eddie, Erynn, Benjamin, Avary, Natalie, Ryland, Rhett, Kaydi, Holly Ann, and Emmet Diesel, all of whom brought him great joy.
Gilbert worked as a carpenter for 33 years, and his skill and dedication were evident in everything he built. He was also an amazing wood carver whose artistic talent reflected both patience and creativity. He took pride in honest work and was respected for the care and craftsmanship he brought to his trade. His hands were not only skilled in building and carving, but also in helping and caring for those he loved.
Outside of work, Gilbert was an avid hunter and outdoorsman who found peace and happiness in nature. He appreciated the beauty of the world around him and enjoyed the simple, meaningful moments that came with time spent outdoors. Those who knew him remember that he loved people, and people loved him in return. His friendly nature and warm spirit made him easy to know and impossible to forget.
Gilbert will be remembered as a loving, friendly, and faith-filled man whose life was centered on family, hard work, and kindness. He lived with a generous heart and a steady presence that brought comfort to those around him. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the work he completed, the carvings he created, and the many lives he touched along the way.
Though he will be deeply missed, Gilbert's memory will remain a source of comfort and gratitude to all who knew and loved him. His life was a blessing, and his example of devotion, strength, and faith will continue to inspire those who carry his memory forward.
