Ernest Louis
Gazdag
January 14, 1925 – January 12, 2025
Ernest L. "Ernie" Gazdag, a cherished family man, respected veteran, and friend to many, passed away peacefully of natural causes on January 12, 2025, just two days shy of his 100th birthday. Born on January 14, 1925, in Detroit, Michigan, Ernie was a beacon of strength and love throughout his long and remarkable life.
Ernie's formative years in Detroit were the foundation of a life characterized by dedication and service. Shortly after graduating from high school, he entered the service, joining the Navy during World War II. He served with honor on the General M. M. Patrick, an experience that shaped his strong sense of duty and patriotism. After his military service, Ernie became a truck driver in the oil industry, where he was known for his reliability and hard work. His colleagues respected him for his integrity and commitment to his job.
Family was the cornerstone of Ernie's life. He was a loving husband to his late wife, Shirley Gazdag, and together they built a legacy of love and devotion. Ernie is survived by his sons, Ernest (Lynn) Gazdag, Randy (Betsy) Gazdag, Russ (Lori) Gazdag, and his daughter, Sherry Gazdag. He was a proud grandfather to numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense joy and pride. Ernie was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Gazdag, his mother, Mary Gazdag, his wife, Shirley Gazdag, and his brother, Joseph Gazdag.
Ernie's interests and hobbies were a reflection of his zest for life and love for his family and friends. He was an avid bowler, sharing strikes, spares, and laughter with those he played with. Hunting was another passion, providing him with opportunities to spend quality time with family and friends in the great outdoors. Ernie also enjoyed his Chivas Regal, a simple pleasure that he indulged in during moments of relaxation and reflection.
Those who knew Ernie would describe him as loving, wise, and thoughtful. He was a man who listened more than he spoke, and when he did speak, his words carried the weight of experience and kindness. His wisdom was a guiding light for his family, and his thoughtfulness was evident in the way he cared for those around him.
Ernie's life was a testament to the values of hard work, family, and service. His legacy will live on in the hearts and memories of those who were fortunate enough to know him. His unwavering love for his family, his dedication to his country, and his commitment to his work have left an indelible mark on the world.
As we say goodbye to Ernest L. "Ernie" Gazdag, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of meaningful moments and lasting contributions. His story is one of triumph, resilience, and the enduring power of love. Ernie's memory will continue to inspire and comfort us as we remember a man who made the world a better place simply by being in it.
