Carmen Julia
Lópéz
March 30, 1946 – February 2, 2025
Carmen Julia Lopez, a beacon of warmth and love, passed away peacefully on February 2nd, 2025, at the age of 78 in Van Buren Township, Michigan. Born on March 30th, 1946, in Aguas Buenas, Puerto Rico, she was a cherished daughter, sister, wife, mami, abuela, madrina, titi, cousin, niece, and friend.
Carmen graduated from Chadsey High School in Detroit, Michigan, where she not only received her diploma but also earned a certificate in Cosmetology. Her passion for beauty and care for others shone through her work. She began her career at Kay's Beauty Shop, where she formed a lifelong friendship with Barbara Kitlinski. Carmen was also known for expertly wielding her scissors to style her family's hair, a testament to her skill and nurturing nature.
Her professional journey included a stint at King Haven Manor in Woodhaven, where she brought joy to many seniors by helping them look their best. Carmen also served at Our Lady of the Woods Church, where she worked for Father Cliff and introduced him to the rich flavors of Puerto Rican cuisine.
Carmen's home on both Larch Drive and Dalton Drive was a hub of happiness and hospitality. Neighbors became extended family, drawn to the warmth of her presence. She was affectionately regarded as a second mother by many, recognized for her role in nurturing not only her own children but also those in the community.
A loving and selfless individual, Carmen was the matriarch of a large and loving family. She was preceded in death by her adoring husband, Jose Lopez, whom she married on September 10th, 1966, and who remained the love of her life until his passing. She was also predeceased by her parents, Carmelo and Julia Alicea, her brothers, Jose Alicea and Francisco Mojica, and her brother-in-law, Ruben.
Carmen's legacy continues through her children, William (Bobbie) Lopez, Felipe Lopez, and Shamin (Brandon) Sanders; her grandchildren, Briana, Sofia, Gabriel, Thomas, Holly (Nick), Matthew, and Luis; and her great-grandchildren, Dakota, Denver, Charlotte, Virginia, Thomas III, and Emma. Her sister, Angelina (Adalberto) Cotto, sister-in-law, Sherry Alicea, sister-in-law, Estella Lopez, and many godchildren, nephews, nieces, and relatives in Puerto Rico also survive her.
Her interests were as varied as they were joyful. Carmen relished her time gardening, traveling, and trying her luck at the casino. She was an active member of several community groups, including the Woodhaven Jaysetts, YMCA Indian Maidens, Eastern Stars, and a founding member of the All in the Family Club. Her dedication to her family never wavered, even in retirement, as she delighted in caring for her grandchildren and ensuring her home was always filled with love, laughter, music, and good food.
Carmen's love for music and cooking was legendary. She hosted Puerto Rican cooking classes to ensure the younger generations could carry on their family's culinary traditions. Her home was a reflection of her spirit-nurturing, graceful, and ever welcoming.
Described as loving, selfless, and thoughtful, Carmen touched the lives of everyone she met. She was the best "Mami" her children could have asked for and an embodiment of unconditional love. Her passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew her, but her spirit and the memories she created will forever be cherished.
Carmen Julia Lopez lived a life that was rich in relationships and experiences. Her love and care for others remain as a guiding light for all who were blessed to know her. Her legacy of love and selflessness will continue to inspire and live on through her family and the countless lives she touched.
