Betty Mae
Manke
April 25, 1928 – August 2, 2024
Betty Mae Manke, a trailblazing aviatrix and a home-run-hitting grandmother, soared into the sunset for her final flight on August 2, 2024, at the age of 96. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on April 25, 1928, Betty's zest for life and her unquenchable spirit took off early and kept gaining altitude throughout her remarkable journey.
Before she could even drive, Betty was already piloting planes, having earned her wings in 1948. Her love for the skies was only matched by her love for Glenn Manke, whom she met at flight school. He wasn't her instructor, mind you - Betty was nobody's co-pilot in life - but he did manage to navigate his way into her heart. They tied the knot in 1952 and embarked on a lifelong adventure together.
Betty wasn't just content with conquering the skies; during WWII, she swung for the fences with the Cleveland Athletic Club, channeling the spirit of a real-life 'A League of Their Own'. And when she wasn't stealing bases, she was sprinting on the track, proving that her talents were as versatile as her personality.
Even in her golden years, Betty didn't lose her competitive edge, snagging medals in the Senior Olympics for softball throwing. Talk about a pitching arm that could probably send a meatball to the moon!
When she wasn't up in the clouds or rounding the bases, Betty served as a secretary for the aviation department at Glidden Paints. You could say she helped keep their business flying high, all the while keeping her feet firmly planted on the ground.
Betty's faith was the compass that guided her through life. She was a devoted mother to Nancy Timm and a doting grandmother and great-grandmother to a squadron of descendants who inherited her spunky and determined nature. With Jenny (Ben) Burmeister, Becky (Heath) Vincent, Jordan, Barrett, Kylie, Peyton, and Carter, the family tree has strong roots and wings to match.
Betty's brothers, Donald and Robert Gates, predeceased her, as did her beloved parents, Frank and Mabel Gates, and her cherished husband, Glenn. Yet, her legacy is as enduring as the countless trails she blazed across the sky.
Described as loving, adventurous, and faith-filled, Betty was the epitome of a life well-lived. She was a faithful Christian woman who dedicated countless hours to volunteer work, touching lives with her generosity and spirit.
Betty's spunk and determination were legendary; she was the kind of woman who would tell you to pull up your socks and then knit you a new pair when you weren't looking. Her laughter was a melody that resonated in the hearts of all who knew her, and her adventurous tales were the kind that could make a stand-up comedian take notes.
As we bid farewell to Betty Mae Manke, let's remember her not with sadness, but with the joy and laughter she brought into this world. She's now cleared for her final takeoff, and we have no doubt she's up there, charming the angels with stories of her earthly escapades.
So here's to Betty - may your skies always be clear, and may your landings be as smooth as your takeoffs were daring. You've left the runway far better than you found it, and for that, we salute you. Godspeed, dear Betty. Your flight plan is now eternal, and your memory, an indelible beacon of light for all of us still navigating the runways of life.
