Betty Jean Baker, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, beloved educator, and cherished member of the Westland community, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on November 24, 1938, in Winnsboro, Louisiana, Betty's journey through life was marked by her unyielding passion for teaching, her love of family, and her deep commitment to faith.

Betty dedicated her professional life to education, teaching both high school students and adults in the Wayne Westland School District. With her expertise in science and a particular enthusiasm for space, she inspired countless students with her vast knowledge and unwavering dedication. Her lessons extended far beyond textbooks, instilling in her pupils a sense of wonder about the universe.

Known for her voracious appetite for reading, Betty could always be found with a book in hand, often engrossed in thrillers and mysteries that held her imagination captive. Her inquisitive mind was matched only by her warm heart, which welcomed family and friends into her home, the heart of many gatherings filled with laughter and love.

As a proud daughter of the South, Betty was an exceptional cook, renowned for her delectable southern cuisine. Her chocolate chip cookies were legendary, and there was hardly a dessert she couldn't master. Family members and friends alike are filled with fond memories of savoring her culinary delights in the comfort of her home.

Betty's faith was a cornerstone of her life, guiding her actions and providing inspiration to those around her. She touched the lives of everyone she met with kindness and compassion, leaving a lasting impact on her family and community.

She leaves behind a loving family, including her grandchildren Justin (Kirsten) Baker, Sarah (Shaw) Tang, Rachel (Michael) Sasse, Georgia (Dave) Kail, Austin (Taylor) Baker, and Shelby Baker, as well as her cherished great-grandchildren Ming Wel Tang, Min Tang, Lennon Kail, Lainey Kail, and August Baker. Betty is also survived by her dear sister, Shirley Hammons. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Credo and Loudell Cobb, husband, Jake Baker, sons, Gilbert Baker and Bryan Baker, and sisters, Judy Cobb, and Valerie Cooper.

Betty Jean Baker will be dearly missed but lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
