Betty Lawrence
Hickman
December 12, 1939 – May 24, 2025
Betty Lawrence Hickman, a beacon of joy and adventure, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2025, in Romulus, Michigan, at the age of 85. Born on December 12, 1939, in Woodbury, Tennessee, she was the cherished daughter of the late Jesse Lawrence Patrick and Mattie Ruth Patrick. Betty's life was a tapestry of love, travel, and service, woven with the threads of her unwavering spirit and infectious happiness.
Betty's journey through life was marked by her devotion to her family. She was a loving sister to Garry Patrick and Melba (Tim) Hauck, and she held dear the memory of her late brother Mike Patrick. The legacy of her love is carried on by her children: Larry, Haze Jr., Gerald, Jeff, and Debra Blackburn. Betty's heart swelled with pride for her 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, each of whom brought her immeasurable joy. Her beloved husband, the late Charles Hickman, shared in the delight of their expansive family, and together they created a home filled with warmth and laughter.
Throughout her career as a clerk for Ford Motor Company, Betty's diligent work ethic and amiable nature made her a respected colleague. Her commitment to community shone brightly in her volunteer work with the local VFW hall, where she contributed her time and care to support veterans and their families. Betty's altruism and kindness left an indelible mark on all who had the pleasure of working alongside her.
Betty's zest for life was evident in her many passions. An avid traveler, she embraced the thrill of exploration, having visited nearly all 50 states—with the notable exception of Alaska. Her adventurous spirit found joy in the simple pleasure of a shopping trip, the tranquility of reading a good book, and the excitement of vacations, especially to Tennessee, where she connected with her roots, and to the sunny shores of Florida. Her love for music graced many ears as she played the organ, and her love for Elvis was known by many. Betty's compassionate heart was seen in her love for her dogs.
Those who knew Betty would describe her as adventurous, loving, and thoughtful. She approached each day with a smile that could light up a room and a positivity that was truly infectious. Her love for life was apparent in every action, from the care she showed her family and friends to the enthusiasm with which she embarked on each new adventure.
Betty's memory will be cherished and celebrated by all who were fortunate enough to know her. She leaves behind a legacy of love, an example of living life to the fullest, and a reminder to embrace each day with happiness and a sense of adventure. Though she has departed from this earthly journey, the impact of her vibrant spirit will continue to resonate in the hearts of her loved ones and in the many lives she touched.
Betty's life was a journey well-traveled, and her story—a beautiful chapter in the book of life—will be revisited with fondness and admiration by all who keep her memory alive. As we bid farewell to this extraordinary woman, we take solace in knowing that her legacy of love and adventure will endure for generations to come.
