Obituary

Bernadine M. Vaughan, affectionately known as Bernie to her friends and family, passed away on February 11, 2025, at the age of 98, in Westland, Michigan. Born on July 3, 1926, in Nankin Township, Michigan, she was the beloved daughter of the late Charles and Gladys Kehrer. Bernie lived a full life, marked by love, generosity, and a deep commitment to her family and community.

Bernie was a cherished sister to the late Ernest, the late Charles (Neva), Richard (Helga), the late Edward (Phyllis), the late Frederick (Virginia), and Beverly (Russell) Lancaster. She was the devoted wife of the late Herbert Vaughan and a loving mother to her sons, Tommy (Maria) Vaughan and Allen (Vickie) Vaughan. Her role as a grandmother was one of her greatest joys, and she doted on her grandchildren Cindy (Marty Monaster) Thuss, Sandy Mutafis, Jacob (Carly) Vaughan, Jessica (Jon Frederick) Vaughan, Ryan Vaughan, and Jamie Vaughan. Bernie was also a proud great-grandmother to Brittney Thuss, Nicole Thuss, Lucy Mutafis, Isaac Vaughan, and Theadora Vaughan, and a delighted great-great-grandmother to the late Evangelina Faith Higgins and Jacob Higgins. She was also a beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Throughout her life, Bernie was actively involved in her community. She served as a dedicated Sunday school teacher, sharing her faith and wisdom with the younger generations. Her professional life included years as a beloved retailer, where she formed lasting friendships with her coworkers, who held her in high regard for her kindness and warmth.

Bernie's interests were as vibrant and varied as her personality. She was an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers, with an impressive knowledge of the players' batting averages. A voracious reader, she found solace and adventure in the pages of countless books. Her love for angels was evident in her collection, and her faith was an integral part of her life, as she was a regular and devoted churchgoer. Known for always having mints and Jolly Ranchers ready for her visitors, Bernie's thoughtfulness and care for others were hallmarks of her character.

Those who knew Bernie would describe her as loving, selfless, and generous. She had a natural ability to make those around her feel valued and loved, never hesitating to put others before herself. Her selflessness was not just a trait but a way of life, as she continuously looked for ways to contribute to the well-being of her family and friends.

Bernie's legacy is one of unwavering love and selfless service. Her memory will be cherished and kept alive through the stories shared by those who were fortunate enough to know her. As we say goodbye to this remarkable woman, we are reminded of the impact one life can have on so many. Bernadine M. Vaughan will be deeply missed, but her spirit will continue to inspire all who were touched by her presence.

As we bid farewell to Bernie, we celebrate a life well-lived—a life that truly embodied the essence of love and generosity. Her memory will be forever treasured in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who were graced by her kindness. Rest in peace, dear Bernie, knowing that your legacy of love will continue to shine brightly through the lives of those you cherished. May her memory be eternal.
