In Loving Memory of Barbara Ann McNally

Barbara Ann (Davis) McNally, age 87, of Westland, Michigan, passed away peacefully in her sleep in the wee hours of the morning on September 2, 2026. Barbara leaves behind a legacy as vibrant and meticulously crafted as the life she lived.

Born and raised in the city of Detroit, her deep connection to history and service started early. As a teenager in the mid 1950s, she was a member of her high school's Civil Defense Club, for the Ground Observer Corps (formed by the United States Air Force), scanning the skies from the rooftops of the local YMCA and school buildings, watching for potential Russian air raids during the height of the Cold War. In her 20s, she went to work as a telephone operator for the Bell Telephone Company, sitting at the switchboard, expertly pulling and pushing plugs to connect calls across the city.

Before long, she married the love of her life, John McNally, and transitioned into her greatest and most active role: raising a family. Her life became beautifully consumed by raising four rambunctious kids born in the span of just five years.

That busy family life eventually grew into shared family adventures. They spent years camping, creating lasting memories. One of their passions was being out on the water. They owned their own boat, and the family shared countless adventures exploring the Detroit River and Lake Erie, or just fishing at the dock. This love for boating naturally led them to proudly join the Coast Guard Auxiliary, where they patrolled local waters together, keeping boaters safe while dedicating hours to teaching and certifying generations of captains.

Barbara loved laughing, teasing, and having a houseful of family. For years, she remained the heart of every holiday, hosting all the family gatherings in her small but ample home. The atmosphere of chatter and laughter were constant and everyone felt entirely at home.

She expressed her love through her talent as a crafter. Her family's homes are filled with treasures she poured her heart and immense patience into-cozy crocheted blankets that will warm generations to come, delicately embroidered pillow cases and linens, hand-painted ceramics, and beautiful woodwork decor. Her eye for detail was especially evident in her woodworking; she built intricate wooden model ships, and famously crafted a stunning, highly detailed 5' x 3' three-story dollhouse. If you were lucky enough to be in her circle, you possessed a true piece of her craftsmanship.

In her earlier years, she was an avid reader who liked history. On the floor at her feet was a perpetual stack of nonfiction and biography books and magazines, and her guilty pleasure was her gossip magazines. She held a deep fascination of the world wars, maritime shipping, the mysteries of the Great Lakes, and of the British royals.

Her passion for history also hit close to home. She greatly enjoyed uncovering her own roots through extensive genealogy research, proudly picking up and following in the footsteps of the foundational work done by her older sister, Shirley Cameron, and oral history by her sister, Bert (Helen).

Her creativity extended outdoors in her flower gardens, roses being her first and truest love.

An independent and fun-loving spirit, Barbara proved that adventure has no age limit when she famously marched out in her 70s to get a tattoo on her ankle-a badge of honor that perfectly encapsulated her joyful, stubborn, and youthful heart.

The family will think of her and beloved husband John every time they look out over the Great Lakes, gather together as a family, or look upon the beautiful things she made with her hands.

She is survived by her loving family, including her four children, Gail Elizabeth Welch (Brian), John Robert McNally (Rita), Karen Jean Green (James), and Patrick James McNally (Tammy). She also leaves behind 12 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren (and one on the way), and 1 great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her cherished husband, John Peter McNally; her parents, Helen and Robert Davis; and her three sisters, Helen Roberta Cote of Sault Ste Marie, Ontario; Shirley Rosemond Cameron of Sault Ste Marie, Ontario; and Lorna Jean Roy of Port St Lucie, Florida.
